KelTec PR-5.7 Quick Start Guide: Video

Everything You Need to Know to Keep that Barrel (and not your head) Spinning.

What's up, guys? This is your KelTec PR-5.7 Quick Start Guide. Let’s get started.

In your box, you’ll find your KelTec PR-5.7, your stickers, two stripper clips, a trigger lock, an RMSC optics plate, and your KelTec PR-5.7 safety instruction and parts manual. This manual also includes information about your lifetime warranty, get to know it, love it, read it. It loves you.

As I said, this is your KelTec PR-5.7 "PR" stands for Pistol Rotary barrel. Anytime you're handling a firearm, make sure it’s clear. This is a carry pistol without a magazine. It takes two 10-round stripper clips, plus one in the chamber, for a total of 20 + 1 rounds in its internal magazine.

The lack of a traditional magazine helps keep this gun under an inch thick, and its rotary barrel design is responsible for keeping it lightweight, coming in at just under 14 oz, making it the slimmest, lightest 5.7 pistol on the market.

Back to the barrel: it has a 4-inch rotary barrel. As of the time of this video, we do not have plans to introduce a threaded barrel option.

Here are your dual recoil guide rods. The KelTec PR-5.7 also includes an accessory rail for lights, lasers, or similar attachments.

This is a long-pull double-action hybrid trigger, but it’s lighter and smoother than your standard double-action. It’s made of steel and doubles as your disassembly mechanism — more on that later.

Here’s your slide stop on the left side of the pistol. On top is the oversized loading and ejection port. You’ll also see your loaded chamber indicator, where you’ll be able to see brass if there’s a round in the chamber.

Lastly, you'll find your serial number right here in the window on the left side of the grip. Shout out to our new Wyoming factory that produces the KelTec PR-5.7! You’ll see that indicated in the serial number with a tiny buffalo icon.

One lesser-known feature you might miss unless you read the manual is the magazine capacity indicator. It's a piece of the follower that protrudes from the bottom of the grip when the gun is fully loaded.

Loading the KelTec PR-5.7 by Hand

Let’s go over your manual of arms. First, I’ll show you how to load 10 rounds by hand.

  1. Pull the side locks to the rear.

  2. Load rounds from the top,  similar to a PMAG.

  3. Make sure the first round loads to the right.

  4. Push rounds straight in. It’s that easy.

Loading with the Stripper Clip

Now I’ll show you how to load your KelTec PR-5.7 clip.

  1. Take your clip body and plunger. The plunger's pointy tip aligns with the pointy end in the clip body.

  2. Slide it in, all the way to the bottom.

  3. You can load 10 rounds of your 5.7 ammunition of choice into the clip.

To load the clip into your KelTec PR-5.7:

  1. Line up the notch on the front and the tab on the back of the clip with the corresponding slots on the KelTec PR-5.7’s loading and ejection port.

  2. Clip goes into the front; tab clicks into the back.

  3. Press down side to side.

  4. Take your plunger and push straight into the gun for your 21st round, giving you a fully loaded 20 + 1 capacity.

You’ll see the grip indicator pop out, and just like that, you’re ready to rock.

Unloading the KelTec PR-5.7

The preferred method to unload the KelTec PR-5.7 is to take it to the range and pull the trigger 21 times.

Alternatively:

  1. Point the gun in a safe direction.

  2. Rotate the gun upside down and cup your hand below.

  3. Rack the slide 21 times, maintaining trigger discipline.

We prefer you flipping out your handy-dandy KelTec hat and using that.

Troubleshooting

If you run into an issue, here’s how to handle it.

Let’s say you have a simulated jam, maybe a failure to extract or eject, and the next round is feeding into it.

  1. Lock the slide to the rear.

  2. Push or pull the stuck round out of the chamber.

  3. Push the following round back into the grip.

  4. Grab your slide, pull it back while maintaining trigger discipline, then release.
